In the prime of his career, Helio Gracie would accept and defeat challenges of much larger, heavier, and stronger men, in his quest to prove the superior effectiveness of Jiu Jitsu. Jiu Jitsu is originally derived from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan judo in the early 20th century, which was itself developed from a number of schools of jiujutsu in the 19th century. Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes taking an opponent to the ground and utilizing ground fighting techniques and submission holds involving joint-locks and chokeholds. The premise is that most of the advantage of a larger, stronger opponent comes from superior reach and more powerful strikes, both of which are somewhat negated when grappling on the ground. |

| White belt- We label this the survival stage. This is the first step of your long journey to the black belt. The white belt should be exposed to all the possible attacks, moves, and positions that jiu-jitsu entails. Although they may not understand all the intricacies, it is necessary for them to be exposed to all of these aspects because it helps the individual fully understand the technical power of the martial art. | ![]() |
| Blue belt- Aside from black belt, blue belt is probably the rank in which students will spend most of their time. At this level the practitioner understands the fundamentals and will start to develop their own way of doing things. They will test everything they see until they start to build their own game. We call this the experimental stage. Students will experiment with all kinds of techniques until they see what works for them. These discoveries take considerable time, and this is why the blue belt is often one of the longest processes in jiu-jitsu. | ![]() |
| Purple belt- At this level you will start to refine your techniques while mentoring others. This is also the level where the student begins to get more access to black belts. A black belt can really challenge the purple belt, and the purple belt reminds the black belt of the time spent in the toughest stage of learning. To achieve the next rank, the purple belt must believe in their skill level. He doesn't let the blue and white belts interfere with their confidence. Also, he must be respectful of his fellow students and have the ability to connect defense and offense. Once they have fulfilled this, they are ready for a brown belt. | ![]() |
| Brown belt- A brown belt is almost a black belt. The brown belt will focus their time on polishing the rough edges to tighten their game. At this level the, small tips help the brown belt mold into the black belt. These small alterations will make all the difference in becoming the black belt. | ![]() |
